History
Monmouth has an interesting history as a town settled by a Christian Church group led by Elijah Davidson, Squire S. Whitman and Thomas Lucas. These men and their families claimed land, carving out a pioneer life in the sparsely populated Pacific Northwest. The town was officially established in 1855. Their religious values became a part of the laws of the town where alcohol was strictly forbidden. As the town grew, merchants and other tried to change the ban on alcohol, but the founding families resisted strongly resisted. Monmouth’s reign as the last town in Oregon to prohibit alcohol ended in 2002 when voters overturned the ban on alcohol that was first put in place in the 1800s.
