Salem, OR Real Estate, Salem Area and Community Information

History

The first residents of Salem OR Real Estate were the Kalapuya Native Americans. They thrived along the Willamette River with the fishing and game it provided. It was these same qualities that brought pioneers to the area in 1812. At first there were just fur trappers, but it was Jason Lee’s Methodist Mission that brought in permanent settlers. By 1842, the mission had started a higher learning center called Oregon Institute.

The Hoosier steam boat enabled passengers, mail, and goods to both reach and leave the city in 1851. By 1880 the population grew to 2,500. Agriculture and logging was the base of their economy. The telegraph and railroad in 1864 established Salem Real Estate as a major city. Salem survived the many struggles of the 1900’s such as wars and the depression to be named the “All American City” in 1961.

Today Salem Properties remain the center of Oregon’s government as well as a center for retail, finances, and services. A complete history of Real Estate in Salem Oregon can be found at www.salemhistory.net.
